Education

The Jesuits are perhaps best known for education, and in Belize it is no different.  Jesuit education focuses on forming the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.  Jesuit education is not about the transference of knowledge; it is about forming young women and men into "men and women with and for others."

For nearly 175 years, our educational apostolate in Belize has formed leaders for all sectors of society, it has nourished the local Church, and it continues to give shape to our young nation.

Primary Education

The Society of Jesus in Belize currently sponsors 31 primary schools: 2 in Belize City (St. Martin de Porres and St. John Vianney) and 29 (!) in the Toledo district of southern Belize.

In our primary schools, we strive to lay a solid foundation for a hope-filled future for our young people and their families.  For many, their struggle is great: poverty, joblessness, and violence place a great strain on young minds and hearts.

We strive to create a safe, supportive, and challenging environment, wherein our children can heal, grow, and learn.

We boast some of the most creative, committed, and faith-filled teachers in the nation!

Secondary & Tertiary
Education

Since 1887, St. John's College has been the premier educational institution in Belize.  We form intelligent, faith-led, and ethical leaders.  More importantly, we form compassionate and committed women and men, who want to make a positive difference in our nation and in the world.

The all-boys high school division was founded in 1887 by Fr. Cassian Gillett, SJ.  As the country developed and the need for higher education grew, SJC launched its "sixth form" (junior college) in 1952 under the leadership of Fr. Robert Razkowski, SJ.  Finally, in 2023, SJC was granted permission to offer bachelors degrees, thus launching its university division, under the leadership of Dr. Alice Peralta.

SJC is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) as well as the Jesuit School Network (JSN).

Help Catholic Education in Belize!

Belize has 312 primary schools, of which the Catholic Church operates 112 -- more than one-third!  Yet many of our school buildings are in terrible shape.  Government contributes nothing to the upkeep of our buildings, and most Catholic parishes do not have the resources to repair roofs and crumbling walls.  The conditions in any number of our schools is dire.

From July - November 2025, Fr. Matthew Ruhl, S.J. will be biking across the United States to raise money and awareness of the challenges in front of us.  Come and be a part of helping to build our nation!
