First-Ever Ignatian Family Convocation

On September 13th and 14th, the Jesuit Community of Belize hosted the first-ever Ignatian Family Convocation. Bringing together the Jesuits of Belize along with some twenty-five lay partners, the event was an opportunity for prayer and conversation around the Jesuit community's apostolic plan for the next seven years.

In what is hoped will become an annual, or even twice-a-year event, the Convocation is a response for two continued calls from the worldwide Society of Jesus: a call for increased Jesuit/ lay collaboration in a shared-mission, as well as a call for ongoing apostolic discernment.

Our plan is not traditional in the sense of having a lot of goals and objectives and activities. The world moves too fast to be trying to make plans for even two years from now, much less seven. The plan is mean to be an organic, living document that changes and grows according to changes in personnel and current needs. "The plan consists of a framework of principles to guide our ongoing planning," he said.

Another key purpose of the event was to continue to build a sense of being an Ignatian Family: that we are all, Jesuit and non-Jesuit, part of the same mission. The mission does not "belong" to the Jesuits; it is Christ's mission, and we are all invited to be a part of it.

To this end, the bulk of Saturday morning was spent sharing about the different activities and initiatives in our various works that serve to advance the mission. Despite being a long morning of listening, participants felt a sense of excitement at everything happening in our Jesuit works throughout the country. More importantly, participants made informal connections, identifying potential partnerships and synergies.
